Here is an interesting video from the BBC of a Cuban cigar factory.Vodpod videos no longer available.
I am not sure I really have much to add except that having a reader is an interesting way to humanizing what would otherwise be a monotonous job. My wife, an anthropologist, claims that the role of Cigar factory readers is well known in her field but it is something that I have never seen. I cannot imagine this being done in any US factory I have ever visited. Cigar making in some ways is unique; there is no noisy machinery and no real need to coordinate between workers. Even beyond that, I am not sure that it would be an easy cultural sell among US workers.
